There was an incident here in Singapore last October 2012 where a 43 year old man sexually assaulted his flatmate. This is no ordinary man – he spent his last twenty years in prison for raping three women. As if it was not enough, not longer than eight months after his release, he is out to pray again. Of course, he was apprehended and is now facing charges of rape.
No matter how cautious and vigilant you are, sometimes things happen. When you face potential rape, it is important that you know what to do. Rapists are predators and they do not care what happens to you as long as they get what they want. You have to protect yourself from them. Here are some tips that you can consider to avert a potential rape:
1. Do not be distracted. Technology will distract you. For example, if you are jogging with your iPod, you are an easy prey because you are not paying attention to your surroundings. Next thing you know you are grabbed and rapped. However, technology can help you. If you notice someone following, pretend that you are talking.
2. Trust your instincts. If there is a potential harm or danger, your instinct will tell you. It is imperative that you trust your instinct because it may be your only chance of surviving. If your instinct tells you to move quickly, you should do that. If it tells you to fight, go ahead but never consider freezing.
3. Bring items for defence. Simple things like pepper spray can help. Do not forget to bring any defensive items with you. Ball pen and sharp objects can help. If your country approves of a taser, you can bring that one too. Your goal is to hurt the attacker to give you chance to flee or ask help.
4. Call out when attacked. When you are in this situation, you should do your best to draw attention to yourself. Shout or yell if you must. If you yell loudly, the attacker may have second thoughts about you. Unless they are fool enough to risk it, you will be safe.
